You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes...
is an open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality, to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.
Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, you’d better get there early…
If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will hug you when we have to stop you [just to make it easier on you (or harder – depending on your propensity for intimacy)].
Poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want.
You don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers.
Please don’t perform anything with a setup that takes much more time than the time it takes for you to walk onstage. Honestly, plugging things in is endlessly boring. If you need to borrow an instrument, figure it out before you’re called to the stage.
IMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged.
You're Going to Die. No. Really. You are.

*John Lester is an award winning songwriter who has, throughout his career, had one foot in the folk/rock/acoustic music scene and the other in jazz. As a writer, John has been awarded the “Song of the Year Award” from the West Coast Songwriters on two occasions.
As a solo performer, John has created a unique show featuring his 100-year-old upright bass named Sarah, after Sarah Vaughan for her lovely vocal-like quality. John also plays acoustic guitar, bass guitars, and ukulele, at times creating live looped tracks onstage for his finely crafted songs and improvisations.
John’s writing style has been influenced by his work as a bassist in various genres. His talents have been utilized by such diverse artists as Nashville hit-songwriter Gretchen Peters, contemporary acoustic troubadour Willy Porter, folk-master Peter Rowan, Concord Jazz Label’s Full Faith and Credit Big Band, and punk rock’s poet laureate Patti Smith.
John’s latest album, Fathers and Sons, is a collection of his most personal and powerful work yet. Inspired by the often unspoken family relationships between men, each song messages the love, pain, tension, struggle, and questions that arise and confound these ties and bonds. From the full acceptance and embrace of a young boy’s gender fluidity in “The Beautiful Princess of Never Come True”, to the merciful attempts at reconciliation with an estranged father during his final days in “The High Road”, to the feeling of forever growing family love in “Real, Real Love”, John’s life experience as a father, husband, son, teacher, and songwriter is felt throughout each song as well. - https://www.johnlestermusic.com/

A lyrical exploration of awakening to the feminine Divine - a screening at The New Parkway Theater in Oakland
You're Going to Die Presents:
Longing Suite, Nicolás Grandi & Lata Mani, HD, 30 mins, 2025
Longing Suite is a meditative, kaleidoscopic videopoem that traces the arc of a heart-mind-body awakening to the Feminine Divine and the sacred in all that exists. Grandi and Mani build on a cycle of poems written by Mani in the 1990s in context of an unexpected spiritual initiation following a head injury. The film draws aesthetic inspiration from the dynamics of the spiritual journey and offers an evocative visual and sensorial experience at once individual and universal.
“The textured weave of sound and image in Longing Suite leads us to a place that feels like spaciousness and intimacy all at once…. Nicolás Grandi and Lata Mani’s hauntingly powerful film is both sacred arc and sensorium; pilgrimage and homecoming.”
- Arundhathi Subramaniam, poet & author of The Gallery of Upside Down Women and Wild Women: Seekers, Protagonists and Goddesses in Sacred Indian Poetry
Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1129320503

Lata Mani is an Oakland based feminist historian, cultural critic, contemplative writer & filmmaker. She has published on a broad range of issues, from feminism and colonialism, to illness, spiritual philosophy and contemporary politics.
Nicolás Grandi is a Buenos Aires based filmmaker, transdisciplinary artist and educator. This is their seventh collaboration.

YG2D Presents: Emergency Grief Space for Minneapolis
Join us for a public virtual event centered on deep grief amidst the ongoing trauma and courageous community efforts in Minnesota.
If our experience doing grief work inside prisons has taught us anything, it’s that we don’t need to wait until we are through the storm to take a moment in community to honor our grief and begin the shared work of healing. Even as ongoing vigilance, endurance and strength rooted in community may be necessary for some time; we want to carve out a space for honoring what has already been lost, whether that is your sense of safety and stability for yourself and your neighbors, or for a person in your community who has been detained, injured, killed or is in hiding. You are welcome to join whether you are in the twin cities or watching events unfold from afar. This is a space to let your community hold the pain and grief with you, while also celebrating and uplifting the resilience, hope and sacrifice so many Minnesotans are showing up for every day.
As facilitators we take your security very seriously, and it’s for that reason we need to be very clear about the limitations of security measures in a public virtual space. Though our moderators will make every effort to remove anyone causing disruption, there is still a possibility of silent participants who don’t have the best interest of the people of Minnesota in mind who might be attempting to gather data. We do not state this to cause undue worry, and we trust you to assess your own security needs, and participate accordingly. If you feel you need to join under a pseudonym or with your camera off, we understand and will be grateful for your presence.
This is a space for sharing your grief and heartbreak, and not a space for discussing sensitive information. We ask that you take great care to not share anything that could put another person at risk. We believe that truth and vulnerability are powerful ways to show up in our communities, helping each other feel more seen, more understood, and more woven into the web of resilience.
We will be facilitating an open sharing & listening space, supported by music and poetry from the facilitators throughout the gathering. Attendees will be invited to sign up and share what’s on their heart for approximately 4 minutes each. You do not need to share if you don’t want to. The listening is just as important as the sharing.
Please join us tonight from 8-10pm CST
Online: ZOOM LINK [No email address needed to join. We recommend using first name only, or an alternate name if you have security concerns]

No. Really. You are.

Please take a few minutes to read our GRIEF RELEASE COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS before you join.
This space is for everyone who might feel supported by gathering in community once a week to make space for ongoing and/or new grief in our lives. We often offer music and readings and time for each participant to share. The length of shares may depend on who's in attendance each week - and there may be times when we make extra room for those who especially need our listening, remembering that our listening is its own medicine, not just for who we listen to, but for ourselves.
Please arrive on time. This is essential to the depth of the container we are able to hold together. We will close entry 10 minutes after the start of the event.
Though it is okay to join and not share, so much of what is possible in these spaces is based on trust, so if you are willing to introduce yourself and be on camera, that can go a long way to creating the kind of safety we know is possible in this space. This is especially helpful for drop-in offerings like this one.
This online event is FREE, every week. If you are in a position to offer a small donation, we very much welcome your generosity. Your contributions help us continue this offering.

*Joey Coe is the singer and songwriter of the Oakland-based indie-rock band Mount Saint Elias, a project praised by American Songwriter and featured on NPR for its expansive, genre-bending blend of folk storytelling and art-pop experimentation. Born in Kentucky, Coe’s songwriting draws deeply from the folk traditions he grew up with, exploring friendship, love, loss, mental health, and the strange humor of being alive. Much of his work—both solo and with MSE—wrestles with loss, memory, and the questions that linger in the wake of tragedy. His solo performances are intimate and unguarded, highlighting the heavily literate lyricism and raw vocal approach that define his style, landing somewhere between a Bon Iver resonance, a Noah Kahan hook, and a Mark Twain side-eye. - https://www.mountsaintelias.com/

Join us as we write about grief with an eye towards the experience of the reader. You’re Going to Die has for years led supportive workshops with a unique space for people to express grief in writing.
There are two main goals in writing: to express yourself and to tell a compelling story. Those aren’t mutually exclusive things. There is a way that both of those qualities can be at their highest at the same time.
—————————-
YG2D member and Oregon Book Award finalist Nick Jaina has published three books. For almost a decade he has taught memoir writing workshops online and in person, exploring dozens of different tools and techniques to open up and create the best story possible from our own lives. He is excited to bring those ideas to the emotionally supportive environment of the YG2D workshop.
Chelsea Coleman is an SF Bay Area singer-songwriter and the Creative Director & Cofounder of YG2D, where she has been helping create and hold space for others to creatively express themselves through the touchpoint of our shared impermanence since 2012. As a singer-songwriter and storyteller she leads by example, by alchemizing her experiences of loss and complex grief into lyrics and melodies that resonate with others and meet them in their vulnerability with a sense of belonging and inspiration.

Join us for a moving evening of performance, ritual, and collective experience honoring the life and legacy of Joanna Macy — visionary teacher, ecophilosopher, and founder of The Work That Reconnects, who passed into the mystery on July 19th, leaving behind a rich legacy including decades of dedicated work to help us metabolize our planetary grief and source from a wild love for the world.
Drawing on Joanna Macy’s Council of All Beings practice, this event invites us to expand our perspective beyond the human and reconnect with the wider community of life. Through creative expression — music, poetry, and participatory ritual — we’ll give voice to the Earth’s many beings and hear their counsel for these times, joining in a shared act of listening, mourning, celebration, and imagination.
Guided by Weaving Earth’s spirit of Interspecies Hospitality & Earth Intimacy practices, we’ll weave story, song and interactive experience as we move through the Spiral of the Work that Reconnects:
- Gratitude for the Miracle of Life
- Honoring Our Pain for the World
- Homecoming to the Body of Earth
- Going Forth in Service to Life
Co-hosted by Lydia Violet and Lauren Dalberth Hage. Featuring special guests Drew Dellinger, Karisha Longaker of MaMuse, Logan Navar, Jules Indelicato, Kele Nitoto, and KJ Song, and the Weaving Earth team.
Audio of Joanna Macy’s own voice will be interwoven throughout the evening, a living thread calling us to remember: even in times of great peril, the beauty and wonder of the Earth endure — and so does our capacity to respond with love.

Lydia Violet Harutoonian- is an Iranian-Armenian-American facilitator-scholar, grief-worker, and folk multi-instrumentalist who studied and worked with Joanna Macy for the past 16 years. She founded and runs The School for The Great Turning, which creates access to educational and therapeutic programs to empower humanity's life-sustaining legacy. In her music, she weaves together her songwriting, folk standards, Iranian ballads, 3-part harmonies, fiddle, banjo, and collective singing into an altar of music to lay our most pressing questions and verdant prayers.
Weaving Earth Center for Relational Education provides nature-based education for action at the confluence of ecological, social and personal systems change. We believe that education must critically engage inherited systems of separation and domination, and at the same time, responsibly recollect a deeper human inheritance: stories of interrelationship, belonging, dignity and respect.
Drew Dellinger is a poet, writer, and speaker whose work bridges ecology, justice, and the sacred.
No. Really.
