This space is for everyone who needs it to gather with community once a week & make space for ongoing &/or new grief in our lives. There will be music, readings, & time for sharing. The length of shares & how many shares will depend on who's in attendance each week - while we make special room for those who especially need our listening, remembering that our listening is its own medicine, not just for who we listen to, but for ourselves.

This online event is as FREE as you need it to be, every week. Especially if you are in financial danger, let it be FREE. We're just happy you're alive & able to join. And if you're earning income (or are just generally well resourced), we very much welcome your generosity...

is an open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality, to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.

Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, you’d better get there early…

If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will hug you when we have to stop you [just to make it easier on you (or harder – depending on your propensity for intimacy)].

Poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want.

You don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers.

Please don’t perform anything with a setup that takes much more time than the time it takes for you to walk onstage. Honestly, plugging things in is endlessly boring. If you need to borrow an instrument, figure it out before you’re called to the stage.

IMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged.

*Amanda Spiller is an artist and adventurer from New Hampshire who made two pivotal decisions at age 25: she laid roots in the Bay Area and learned guitar. Now, she never knows if she’s writing a poem or a song. Amanda makes grief feel beautiful by holding space for pain and joy simultaneously. Her words meet you in your moments of struggle and remind you that only in darkness can you see your own light. Spiller will read poems from her book Laying Roots and perform songs from her debut EP, including her indie grief banger Haze, where violin and cello ground her ethereal vocals into a griefscape that finally puts words to what you might be feeling.

*Storytelling is a central theme woven through Jordan Edelheit’s work and life. Alongside incarcerated individuals, she was a co-organizer of the first TEDx event inside of an adult prison (Marion Correctional Institution in Marion, Ohio). This began a journey over the last decade of engaging with the prison system and those who have been touched by its devastating weight through creative expression. After organizing TEDx events, poetry slams, and a speaker series at MCI she co-launched ALIVE INSIDE, YG2D's prison program. ALIVE INSIDE hosts programming and open mics centered around grief, loss, and hope to bring people deeper into connection with each other, the fierce realities of our prison system, and the incredible resilience of each human impacted by it.

Danny Nguyen became interested in movement while performing color guard in Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International. Shortly after graduating from UC Berkeley in Dance and Performance Studies, Danny toured with the Broadway musical Blast!, performing in the United States, South Korea, and Japan. He has been dancing professionally for over 15 years having performed with Fog Beast, Joe Goode, Kim Epifano, Scott Wells, Katie Faulkner, and BANDALOOP. Danny’s dancing career has led to a passion for helping others understand and navigate movement and the body; he is currently a physical therapist for SFUSD supporting children in their movement journeys.

Maya Elise leads an endearing indie-folk band whose music is a warm expression of harmonic solace with stories that speak to the vulnerable curiosity of our lives. The music itself brings a certain nostalgia with classic folk harmonies, but stays current with inventive song structures & relatable yet personal storytelling. The sweeping honesty inherent in this group’s music can move a crowd to both silence and jubilation. The band’s self-released album Everything We Watered is the pinnacle of Maya Elise & The Good Dream’s welcoming and genuine indie-folk music to date. - https://www.mayaelisemusic.com/

You're Going to Die Presents:
Alive Conversation w/Báyò Akómoláfé
featuring music from Singing the Bones
recorded live for You're Going to Die: The Podcast with your host Ned Buskirk

Join us for an enlivening evening of holding the light & dark in community, with a live recorded conversation and Q&A with widely celebrated international speaker, posthumanist thinker, poet, teacher, public intellectual, essayist, and author Báyò Akómoláfé, followed by music from Singing the Bones, hosted by You're Going to Die's Ned Buskirk, and featuring poetry from Amanda Nagai. The evening will be recorded for an episode of You're Going to Die: The Podcast.

Báyò Akómoláfé is the grateful life-partner to ‘EJ’, father to Alethea Aanya and Kyah Jayden Abayomi, son of Olufunmilayo Ibidapo Akomolafe and Ignatius Abayomi Akomolafe, and descendant of Yoruba fields of archetypal becomings and mythopoeic landscapes. He is an author, celebrated speaker, teacher, and self-styled trans-public intellectual (a concept imagined together with and inspired by the shamanic priesthood of the Yoruba healer-trickster)- whose vocation goes beyond justice and speaking truth to power to opening up other spaces of power-with, and queering fond formulations and configurations of hope. - https://www.bayoakomolafe.net/

Singing the Bones is a collaboration of three American artists from different lineages sharing the folk music of their ancestral cultures. Kele Nitoto plays songs from the Congo, Haiti, and South Africa; M'Gilvry Allen plays music from Ireland, Scotland, and Scandinavia; Lydia Violet plays songs from Iran and Armenia. As they take turns centering the music from each of these places, they also take turns supporting each other, weaving their ancestries together into a dynamic musical conversation. - https://lydiafiddle.com/singing-the-bones

*This month's You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose, & Everything Goes features music from Scott Ferreter...

The solo music of Scott Ferreter comes through with a strong sense of time & place, though the exact time & precise place don’t exist. California certainly comes through strong, having grown up & spent his life in Northern California, but so does Ireland & the American South. His particular commitment to vulnerability & desire to peel back the layers of truth in his songwriting suggest some tethers to the folk resurgence of the 60’s or the emo wave of the early 2000’s, but his rhythms show much more loyalty to MoTown & R&B, and always seems to be striving toward something ancient.

Grief, liberation, ancestry, & selfhood are themes that his songs are constantly returning to. It is equally likely that he will cry or tell a dad joke on stage, but his commitment to presence & honesty run through both equally.

Beyond his own songs, he is one half of the touring/recording duo The Feelings Parade, works as a producer/engineer, and plays bass and electric guitar with MaMuse and Cassandra Lewis.

*This month's You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose, & Everything Goes features music from Zoë Winter...

A bay-area local who’s been compared to Laura Marling and called the Joni Mitchell of Sonoma County, Zoe discovered her ability to play music by ear at the age of 7. Her career began playing keys & bass in the graffitied classrooms of SF’s School of Rock and singing with various funk bands. Her influences shifted from rock and roll and R&B to jazz pianists like Bill Evans and Robert Glasper, Neo Soul singers like Eryka Badu and D’angelo, and genre-defying vocalists like Thom Yorke. Eventually she moved to acoustic guitar and removed all unnecessary sounds.

To stand on a stage alone with nothing but an acoustic guitar is the most punk rock thing to me.

Whether she’s alone on a dark stage with her guitar or singing with a full band, her powerful, velvety voice gives you an excuse to crack open and confront whatever it is you’ve been running from.

It’s 2023, and whether you’ve founded a startup that went under, got laid off from a job you thought was safe, found yourself on a dreaded PIP counting your days, or never got your career off the ground to begin with - chances are you’re familiar with the feeling of failure in business. But the rat race doesn’t leave a lot of space to reflect on the grief that these challenges bring. We dust off our resumes, rewrite our failures as successes, put on our armor and get back out there because we all have rent to pay, and “bigger” forms of grief we find worthy of our emotional space...

But not on this night. On this night, you’re invited to bring the evidence of your failures, the mugs, tshirts, the storie - and commune with us in tears and laughter. Part trolling performance art, part grief open mic, all realness. Because the reality is - your startup is probably going to die - and so is everyone else’s.

YG2D Presents: Grief & Healing w/Writing & Music - an IN-PERSON Workshop

You're Going to Die Presents:
Grief & Healing
w/Writing & Music
a YG2D Workshop

REGISTER NOW: https://bit.ly/47u3kdp

This 3 hour in-person communal workshop offers a chance to creatively express ourselves and engage with our own and our collective grief & healing through writing and music. It’s a chance to connect to community, remember we are not alone, and tap into our innate wisdom to creatively face our unique experiences of being mortal.

In this workshop, we’ll write in response to several prompts, in intimate community, co-creating a space of deep sharing and listening. There will be readings and rituals offered, with time to write quietly together and to share if you want to, including live music to inspire our writing, for grounding, deepening, integration, and to hold us like musical medicine when we need it. The workshop will close with a sound bath from Emma Peck (https://www.soundandsoulsf.com/) to support integration through the healing vibrations of crystal alchemy bowls and vocals.

Our goal is to facilitate a safe space for vulnerable creative communal engagement with our grief, with those who are willing to face what's hard and hold it together.

WHEN: Thursday, November 30th from 7-10pm PST
LOCATION: The Center SF’s Red Room - 548 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA 94117
PRICE: Sliding Scale $40-120

COVID SAFETY INFORMATION (YG2D POLICIES)

As an organization that congregates around our shared mortality, it is important for us to acknowledge the real threat of Covid-19, especially for folks who are immune-compromised. For our shared safety, we are offering the following risk-mitigation measures and venue information to create a safer, more inclusive gathering space:

• Capacity of the Red Room is 40 seated, but we will have a workshop capacity of 17 to allow for spaciousness and distancing as needed.

• The space will have air filters and there will be windows to open to maximize air flow.

• We request that each participant take a rapid antigen test on the same day of the workshop. We can provide a test for you if needed. Here is an updated guide for self-administering a rapid-test for the most accurate results: https://www.ontariohealth.ca/sites/ontariohealth/files/2022-02/COVID-19RapidAntigenTests-HowtoCollectaSample.pdf

• We request that participants be as up to date as possible with available COVID vaccines and boosters.

• We ask that if you feel any illness symptoms to please stay home. We are happy to provide a refund as needed.

• We encourage masks while in the space. Please be aware that The Center has multiple shared spaces with varying degrees of risk and that people/participants may not be wearing masks.

We understand that no in-person gathering is without risk and we are grateful for your help in keeping our community alive and safe.

You're Going to Die: A Letter to my Grief
www.yg2d.com

Since the first pandemic winter, the You’re Going to Die non-profit has been holding writing workshops online and more recently, in person at The Center SF. The pieces written and shared within these groups have been some of the most impactful, vulnerable, meaningful works of expression we have ever experienced.

It’s finally time to bring these deeply alchemical pieces to our broader community. Please join us for these community readings, as we dive into the intricacies of grief and the simple truths of our aliveness together. Hosted by Chelsea Coleman and Amanda Nagai.

October is our non-profit’s community fundraiser month, and we invite you to consider offering more through the ticket tier options to help support our organization! Your contributions make it possible for us to offer scholarships to these writing workshops, as well as funding our Alive Inside Prison program and our Songs for Life hospice program.

*Elizabeth Lubin’ songwriting is a catalyst for contemplation, her rhythms a rootsy homage to intimacy. There is a tenderness in this music that feels like the kin of your own heartbeat. The melodies are digging for the roots of the ancestral, seeking new growth and healing to replace where a stump beholden to a discouraged heart once stood. In addition to songwriting and band-leading, Elizabeth is a music teacher currently based in the Bay Area. She has been teaching piano, guitar, bass and voice in private and classroom settings.

No one turned away for lack of funds (applies to advanced sales too)! Email connect@yg2d.com if you’d like a ticket reserved for you at a lower or $0 price. We got you.

FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/713450226918080/

This 3 hour in-person communal workshop offers a chance to creatively express ourselves and engage with our own (and collective) mortality through writing and music. It’s a chance to connect to community, remember we are not alone, and tap into our innate wisdom to creatively face our unique experiences of being mortal.

In this workshop we will work through a series of writing prompts together to co-create a space of deep sharing and listening. There will be music throughout the session for grounding, deepening and integration. This workshop is not about acceptance, death positivity or legacy, though these may be a part of your experience. This is about considering mortality as something that might help us make meaning, not just in concept, but in our real day to day lives - not overriding our fears, but letting them breathe alongside our gratitude, our grief, our joy, and our pain.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 25th from 7-10pm PST
LOCATION: The Center SF’s Red Room - 548 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA 94117
PRICE: Sliding Scale $40-120

---------------------

Last year, longtime YG2D friend and community member, Amanda Nagai, lost the person she was dating to a shocking death by suicide. She began to write poetry as a healing and sense-making process in the months after Peter’s death, and has shared several of them at You’re Going to Die events. Last Fall, she and You’re Going to Die’s Creative Director, Chelsea Coleman, hosted an intimate performance weaving her words and Chelsea’s original songs. The audience members were deeply touched, moved, and changed by the offering.

Amanda and Chelsea have decided to offer these vulnerable poems and songs for a public audience. This performance presents an intense and transformative arc of healing, and we’ve invited musical guest, Adrienne Shamszad, to close out the night with her musical spell-casting in a way that helps us integrate and ground ourselves at the close of the show.

In Amanda’s words: “This is the story of my journey since that moment. It is a story of distress, thought spirals, rawness, surrender, clarity, confusion, beauty, sweetness, love, and more pain and confusion. But ultimately, it is a story of the messy, sacred road of processing loss — and the deep commitment to life that I have found in my intimate examination of death.”

---------------------

As always, we don’t want money to be a hindrance to anyone who needs to be here. Please reach out to us as connect@yg2d.com for financial accommodation.

Ashkenaz is wheelchair accessible.

You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes...
is an open mic event, a communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality, to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.

Whether our own deaths feel near or far away, whether we have the privilege of coasting through life in denial of our eventual deaths & the deaths of those we love, or whether we are face to face with it all too often - most of us have something to say about it. In a world that would rather sweep sadness, anger, confusion, & grief under the rug, we will make a space for it together.

Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, get there early…

If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will stand up & get on stage with you & make things really awkward until you stop, & then give you a hug if you want one.

Poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want. There will be an acoustic guitar made available at the show.

You don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers.

Please don’t perform anything with a setup that takes much more time than the time it takes for you to walk onstage.

IMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged.

is an open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality, to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.

You're Going to Die. No. Really. You are.

*Brian Belknap is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter in the mold of Lucinda Williams and Townes Van Zandt. His music— a rough blend of broke-down folk, junk-country blues, and gut-bucket gospel, rendered on accordion, slide guitar, and mandolin—is a product of the rich cultures of San Francisco and New Orleans, the two cities he calls home. Belknap’s latest offering, In Lieu of Flowers, once again finds him in the capable hands of producer Mike Coykendall (M. Ward, She & Him, Bright Eyes, Blitzen Trapper). The record is about coping with loss (both personal and collective), and finding redemption in a world in its own time of reckoning. - https://www.brianbelknap.net/

a YG2D Workshop

REGISTER NOW: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/541516389097

FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/941670107205178/

WHEN: Tuesday, February 28th from 7-10pm PST
LOCATION: The Center SF’s Red Room - 548 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA 94117
PRICE: Sliding Scale $40-120

We offer the workshop on a sliding scale, but ask about further financial support if you need it to attend!
***Full scholarships available for our BIPOC community***

In order to preserve the uniquely intimate & personalized nature of this offering, space for this event will be limited, & registration is required to attend.

*Indie musician and singer-songwriter Caitlin Jemma speaks for the multitudes on her celestial new disco-folk album, True Meaning, out September 17th on American Standard Time Records. Conjuring the soulfulness of Norah Jones, the melancholy of Joni Mitchell, and the lyric-bending bewitchment of Bonnie Raitt, Jemma takes listeners on an atmospheric journey from heartbreak to hope throughout the ten dynamic tracks which make up True Meaning—a vulnerable-yet-spirited release exploring the full emotional spectrum of being human, while posing an age-old philosophical question: “What is the true meaning of life?” - https://www.caitlinjemma.com/
