You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes...
is an open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality, to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.
Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, you’d better get there early…
If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will hug you when we have to stop you [just to make it easier on you (or harder – depending on your propensity for intimacy)].
Poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want.
You don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers.
Please don’t perform anything with a setup that takes much more time than the time it takes for you to walk onstage. Honestly, plugging things in is endlessly boring. If you need to borrow an instrument, figure it out before you’re called to the stage.
IMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged.
You're Going to Die. No. Really. You are.

You're Going to Die Presents a GRIEF & GRATITUDE open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality, to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.
No. Really. You are.

*Scott Elliott Ferreter, known for his duo, The Feelings Parade, and as a member of beloved Northern-California band, MaMuse, has a history of laying it all on the line. His devotion to music, itself, has him comfortable wearing many hats (songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist), though he is most at home behind the mic. His songs take on topics of ambitious depth—impermanence, healing, death, and ancestry— yet his humor and realness bring it all together with gentleness and easeful reverence. Having played enormous stages like the Masonic (as a special guest of Glen Hansard), as well as the Fox Theater in Oakland, he’s also stayed rooted with a history of playing state prisons and busking on the street. All said and done, he holds a rare kind of presence on whatever stage he steps onto.

*John Lester is an award winning songwriter who has, throughout his career, had one foot in the folk/rock/acoustic music scene and the other in jazz. As a writer, John has been awarded the “Song of the Year Award” from the West Coast Songwriters on two occasions.
As a solo performer, John has created a unique show featuring his 100-year-old upright bass named Sarah, after Sarah Vaughan for her lovely vocal-like quality. John also plays acoustic guitar, bass guitars, and ukulele, at times creating live looped tracks onstage for his finely crafted songs and improvisations.
John’s writing style has been influenced by his work as a bassist in various genres. His talents have been utilized by such diverse artists as Nashville hit-songwriter Gretchen Peters, contemporary acoustic troubadour Willy Porter, folk-master Peter Rowan, Concord Jazz Label’s Full Faith and Credit Big Band, and punk rock’s poet laureate Patti Smith.
John’s latest album, Fathers and Sons, is a collection of his most personal and powerful work yet. Inspired by the often unspoken family relationships between men, each song messages the love, pain, tension, struggle, and questions that arise and confound these ties and bonds. From the full acceptance and embrace of a young boy’s gender fluidity in “The Beautiful Princess of Never Come True”, to the merciful attempts at reconciliation with an estranged father during his final days in “The High Road”, to the feeling of forever growing family love in “Real, Real Love”, John’s life experience as a father, husband, son, teacher, and songwriter is felt throughout each song as well. - https://www.johnlestermusic.com/

No. Really. You are.

*Joey Coe is the singer and songwriter of the Oakland-based indie-rock band Mount Saint Elias, a project praised by American Songwriter and featured on NPR for its expansive, genre-bending blend of folk storytelling and art-pop experimentation. Born in Kentucky, Coe’s songwriting draws deeply from the folk traditions he grew up with, exploring friendship, love, loss, mental health, and the strange humor of being alive. Much of his work—both solo and with MSE—wrestles with loss, memory, and the questions that linger in the wake of tragedy. His solo performances are intimate and unguarded, highlighting the heavily literate lyricism and raw vocal approach that define his style, landing somewhere between a Bon Iver resonance, a Noah Kahan hook, and a Mark Twain side-eye. - https://www.mountsaintelias.com/
