You’re Going to Die presents: Losing My Religion is an open mic for grieving religious & spiritual communities, healing from extremism, and navigating the complex intersections of connection, belonging, belief and identity.
Whether you extracted yourself or you were exiled from a religious/spiritual community or belief system, the grief for what and who you left behind deserves attention, recognition and care. This evening we will be making space for each other to share about the grief and trauma of leaving behind a community, restructuring our identities, finding a new sense of direction and purpose, and moving through anger. This is also a place for honoring the aspects of these communities that you miss, ways that you may have felt belonging, nurturance, spiritual connection, and maybe even spiritual authority. Together we can also explore the ways that bond building and cultivation of healthy community might be harder to navigate after experiencing the harm of exclusionary and exploitative group structures.
Though we will be making space for any form of community-related grief (not just religious/spiritual communities), we do want to extend a special invitation for folks who spent some amount of their lives immersed in high-control and/or high-demand groups.
The intention for this night is not to bash religion or to match the level of judgmentalism that many of us faced both within and outside of these groups, BUT that being said, there is plenty of room here for anger and humor, and we won’t be asking anyone to censor themselves to make other people comfortable, as we know many of you spent too many years doing that. We will also absolutely be making room for the tenderness of the grief—maybe even the deep desire for the kind of belonging we felt in these groups—that may be harder to access now, and gratitude for any parts of your experience that you want to honor and celebrate: your strength, your resilience, your connective heart, your discernment, all of it is welcome.
About your hosts:
Chelsea and Destiny were both raised in fundamentalist, evangelical charismatic Christian communities. Chelsea in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Destiny in Nashville, Tennessee, BOTH of which (I am finding out just now) claim the title of being the “Buckle of the Bible Belt” lol. They both led worship bands and spoke in tongues, prophesied and devoted themselves deeply to their beliefs and their communities and then they both left and found each other in the city of heathens, San Francisco, at an event called You’re Going to Die.
Format:
This evening is an open mic with musical performances woven throughout from Chelsea and Destiny. Come prepared or unprepared! We invite all kinds of shares, from poetry, prose and song, to spontaneous storytelling. You can share on topic or off topic! We won’t tell you what to do!! You’ve likely experienced enough of that! The only rule is that you have to limit your share to 5 minutes! We will stop you!
You don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers.
IMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged.
