You're Going to Die offers another mortally conscious entertainment experience, proudly presenting great artists as they deserve to be presented: in the concert context of acknowledging their musical mortal magic. This show is a part of an ongoing monthly concert series, the 3rd Thursday of every month, held in the container of our city's beautifully historic San Francisco Columbarium & Funeral Home...

Tomo Nakayama has consistently created music that is complex, nuanced, & emotionally compelling. His decade of work both as a solo artist & as frontman in his chamber-pop band Grand Hallway has been praised by NPR, New York Times, & KEXP. Known for his crystalline high-tenor voice, intricate fingerpicking, cinematic production style, & simple, poetic lyrics imbued with warmth & humanity, He was Artist in Residence at Seattle’s Town Hall, where he wrote & recorded his solo debut album, Fog On The Lens with producer Yuuki Matthews (The Shins, Sufjan Stevens), which spent 8 weeks on the CMJ Top 200 & was named “Album of the Month” by Seattle Met. His latest album, Pieces of Sky, finds Nakayama venturing further into the digital chamber folk sound of his debut album while incorporating ambient synths, dream pop atmospherics & analog drum machines into the mix. They reflect his experiences of touring solo across the US, Japan, & Europe, & a year spent busking & people watching at Seattle Tacoma International Airport. - https://www.tomonakayama.com/

The Hollywood Hills-born daughter of a horror filmmaker & sister of a cult comedian, Foxtails Brigade front-girl Laura Weinbach grew up in a household that embraced eccentricity. Her next-door neighbors were circus contortionists with emus & fang-toothed monkeys as pets & her childhood activities included snail hunting & spying on celebrity neighbors like Slash, Ice-T, & Larry from Perfect Strangers. Laura’s upbringing is present everywhere in Foxtails Brigade, from the lyrical imagery to the hand-drawn artwork & sophomoric Instagram cartoons. - http://www.hungryflies.org/

VENUE: Located off the beaten path, at the end of a residential cul-de-sac in the Richmond District, the copper-domed, Neo-Classical columbarium is a hidden gem & an architectural wonder. The structure features a large rotunda, mosaic tile floors, ornate stained-glass windows & a domed skylight. A colossal 45-foot atrium is surrounded by intricate balconies, with each of the 4 floors providing a glimpse into San Francisco’s history. Big thanks to Brian Kestenblatt & the staff of San Francisco Columbarium & Funeral Home for working so wonderfully to make special events like this happen!

PARKING: There is a parking lot, but space is limited. Public transportation is recommended.

COMFORT: The space was built in the late 1800s, so there is no heat, but a limited number of blankets will be available for use. Dress warmly!

All performances end at 10:30pm.
Seating is first come, first served.

We recommend you buy in advance to ensure being a part of the event (parlor shows often sell out), but you can also try purchasing at the door on the night of the show (although, we do NOT set aside a block of tickets for door purchase)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, you’d better get there early…

If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will hug you when we have to stop you [just to make it easier on you (or harder – depending on your propensity for intimacy)].

Poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want.

You don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers.

Please don’t perform anything with a setup that takes much more time than the time it takes for you to walk onstage. Honestly, plugging things in is endlessly boring. If you need to borrow an instrument, figure it out before you’re called to the stage.

IMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged.

You're Going to Die. No. Really. You are.

Oakland-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, visual & theater artist, Zena Carlota uses her dynamic talents to navigate “the space between dreams, ancestry & memory in sound & imagery.” She is known for crafting genre-defying odes to what is lost, & reclaiming histories carried by Carlota’s distinctive soothing voice & the atmospheric sound of the Kora, a 21-string West African bridge harp she learned over ten years of study. - www.zenacarlota.com

Calvin Arsenia has built a reputation for turning the arts world on its head. While the harp has allowed this Kansas City native to become a man of the world (gaining followings in Paris, Edinburgh, & at the Outlyre festival in Austria), it’s his unique ability to craft a stimulating setting at his live shows that has all eyes fixed on this conspicuous musician & his breathtaking approach to harp music. His angelic, classically-trained voice soars over audiences, enchanting even the fussiest of fans, beckoning them to join him as he flirts between genres. But the music is just one part of his prodigious performances, for Calvin believes the art is in crafting the perfect moment. His music is best served live, with sensational performances & high fashion from the visually striking performer who stands at well over six feet tall. - https://www.calvinarsenia.com/

Nick Jaina is an author & musician born in Sacramento & currently residing in no particular place. He is finishing his first novel, Hitomi, if you would just give him a second. His first book, the memoir Get It While You Can, was a finalist for the 2016 Oregon Book Award. He has released several albums & co-founded a ballet company. He teaches writing workshops around the world. - http://nickjaina.com/

Kendra McKinley is a San Francisco Bay Area singer, songwriter & bandleader whose songs burst with color, wonder, sensuality & wit. Finger painting with the sounds of chamber pop, jazz, soul & psychedelia, McKinley draws from a deep well of empathy. Whether she’s performing solo with a guitar & a looping pedal, fronting a full funk band, or collaborating with artists both local & around the globe, McKinley’s confident, honeyed voice enacts a gravitational pull on all who hear it. - https://www.kendramckinley.com

Chelsea Coleman, an Oklahoma grown singing-songwriting powerhouse, creates sanctuaries out of songs, wherein her audience is moved, humbled, & exalted. A courageous & vulnerable storyteller, she invites you to endure open heart surgery, skillfully mending your heartache with strands of golden thread. Each listener leaves more integrally woven in to the tapestry of humanity. - https://www.chelseacolemanmusic.com

You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes... is an open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality, to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.

Whether our own deaths feel near or far away, whether we have the privilege of coasting through life in denial of our eventual deaths & the deaths of those we love, or whether we are face to face with it all too often - most of us have something to say about it. In a world that would rather sweep sadness, anger, confusion, & grief under the rug, we will make a space for it together.

Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, you’d better get there early…

If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will stand up & get on stage with you & make things really awkward until you stop, & then give you a hug if you want one.

Poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want. There will be a piano & an acoustic guitar made available at the show.

This show is a part of an ongoing monthly concert series, the 3rd Thursday of every month, held in the container of our city's beautifully historic San Francisco Columbarium & Funeral Home...

The Feelings Parade is the alchemy that happens when songwriters Scott Ferreter & Morgan Bolender come together to bare their souls through song & story. Their live shows--like their songs--are known for being simultaneously gritty & compassionate, & their sound exists somewhere between the nostalgic, harmony-rich acoustic singer-songwriter styles of the 60’s & a harder-hitting, electric barrage of texture & groove. Their live show is a deeply human experience--often filled with both tears of sorrow and tears of laughter, and they have come to be known for their vulnerable presence and storytelling as much as their music. - https://thefeelingsparade.com/

Josiah Johnson is best known for being a founding member of The Head & the Heart. He took a break from that work a few years ago to learn how to live more wholly integrated & to work with & through problems with addictions. His expanding solo creations are transcendent, healing folk songs. Deep & soulful ballads that paint the imagination with rich & emotional landscapes of love, loss & transformation. Josiah's solo performances highlight a stripped down, emotive, lyrics-and-voice-first kind of song craft, inimitable in its sincerity & beauty, with the powerful joy of singing together. - https://www.josiahsjohnsons.com/

Big thanks to Brian Kestenblatt & the staff of San Francisco Columbarium & Funeral Home for wokring so wonderfully to make special events like this happen!

PARKING: There is a parking lot, but space is limited. Public transportation is recommended.

COMFORT: The space was built in the late 1800s, so there is no heat, but a limited number of blankets will be available for use. Dress warmly!

You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes...
is an open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality,
to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.

No. Really. You are.

YOU'RE GOING TO DIE: POETRY, PROSE & EVERYTHING GOES...

You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes... Open Mic at The Lost Church - San Francisco w/Ned Buskirk & special guest musicians The Singer and The Songwriter...

The Singer and The Songwriter is the musical duo of vocalist/songwriter Rachel Garcia & guitarist/songwriter Thu Tran. “The duo creates soft melodic songs, that could just as easily exist as poems. Beautiful, & full of sound & emotion” (Playlist Play) while their multi-cultural backgrounds bring depth & diversity to the rich traditions of folk, jazz & blues music, genres they navigate between with ease & fluidity. Garcia’s voice is “rich & mellow, strong & elegant, delicate & turbulent” (The Huffington Post) while Tran’s dynamic guitar-playing “shimmies & swings like Django Reinhardt” (Nooga). At times heartbreaking, at times hilarious, their performances are open-hearted conversations with the audience where they share their stories full of honesty, humor & wit, while delivering their songs with riveting, economical precision. - www.thesingerandthesongwriter.com

You're Going to Die offers our first ever fully curated entertainment experience outside of San Francisco, proudly presenting great artists as they deserve to be presented: in a performance space deep & wide enough to hold all their brilliant articulations of the grittiest, darkest & most complex healing journeys we get to navigate as humans, in a room full of mortals who will collectively dive in with them, offering an opportunity to expand beyond ourselves into the wisdom of community, elevated in our togetherness with the living & the dead.
And we might dance a little, too.

YG2D Presents: Josiah Johnson

Josiah is best known for being a founding member of The Head and the Heart. He took a break from that work a few years ago to learn how to live more wholly integrated and to work with and through problems with addictions. His expanding solo creations feel good in intimate spaces. Deep and soulful ballads that paint the imagination with rich and emotional landscapes of love, loss and transformation. Josiah's solo performances highlight a stripped down, emotive, lyrics-and-voice-first kind of song craft, inimitable in its sincerity and beauty. - www.josiahjohnson.com

YG2D Presents: Zena Carlota

Oakland-based Zena Carlota wears many hats. As a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, visual and theater artist, Carlota uses her dynamic talents to navigate “the space between dreams, ancestry and memory in sound and imagery.” She is known for crafting genre-defying odes to what is lost, and reclaiming histories carried by Carlota’s distinctive soothing voice and the atmospheric sound of the Kora, a 21-string West African bridge harp she learned over ten years of study. - www.zenacarlota.com

YG2D Presents: Kelsey Gustafson

Kelsey Gustafson teaches body movement for trauma resolution, helping people reclaim their bodies, their pleasure, and their creativity. - www.kelseygustafson.com

YG2D Presents: Sam Sax

sam sax is a queer, jewish, poet, & educator. He's the author of Madness (Penguin, 2017) winner of The National Poetry Series and ‘Bury It’ (Wesleyan University Press, 2018) winner of the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. He’s received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Lambda Literary, & the MacDowell Colony. He’s the two-time Bay Area Grand Slam Champion, author of four chapbooks & winner of the Gulf Coast Prize, The Iowa Review Award, & American Literary Award. His poems have appeared in BuzzFeed, The New York Times, The Nation, Poetry Magazine + other journals. YG2D Presents: Kim Lembo

When asked to sum up her last 15 years, Lembo says this: “The purpose of my semi-retirement from music was to discover who I am off the stage. I had spent most of my life prior either on the stage or, trying to get on it. The irony is, the work I was doing often times brought me on stage to talk with hundreds or even, thousands of people. I guess it is just who I am. That said, I’m much more interested in evolving and growing as a musician than trying to be a rock star. I’m fascinated by how music heals, moves, motivates and brings us together in community. It is a spiritual quest now, the wannabe rock star days behind me. I wasn’t very good at it anyway. I’m much better at being part of the whole of the experience as opposed to being the focus.” - www.kimlembomusic.com

The Lost Church is Cash Only at the door (at this time).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

No. Really. You are.

Whether our own deaths feel near or far away, whether we have the privilege of coasting through life in denial of our eventual deaths & the deaths of those we love, or whether we are face to face with it all too often - most of us have something to say about it. Big thanks to Bobby Jo Valentine for the idea & to Brian Kestenblatt for the space!

OPEN MIC: Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to share, arrive early. If you’re going to perform, please keep it under 5 MINUTES. If you feel compelled to, share whatever you want, but you don't have to perform anything at all - the audience is as essential as the performers.

PARKING: There is a parking lot, but space is limited. Public transportation is recommended.

COMFORT: The space was built in the late 1800s, so there is no heat, but a limited number of blankets will be available for use. Dress warmly!

The Camp Fire is the deadliest & most destructive wildfire in California history. It is also the deadliest wildfire in the United States, as well as the seventh-deadliest U.S. wildfire overall. Named after Camp Creek Road, its place of origin, the fire started on November 8, 2018, in Butte County, in Northern California. The fire has caused 77 civilian fatalities, injured 12 civilians & five firefighters, covered an area of about 140,000 acres, & destroyed 11,862 structures, including 9,700 single-family homes & 118 apartment buildings, with most of the damage occurring within the first two days.

The fire forced the evacuation of Paradise, Magalia, Centerville, Concow, Pulga, Butte Creek Canyon, & Yankee Hill & threatened the communities of Butte Valley, Chico, Forest Ranch, Helltown, Inskip, Oroville, & Stirling City. Within the first day, the fire essentially destroyed the community of Concow & the town of Paradise, incinerating homes, businesses, churches, a hospital, schools, & a rest home.

the OAKLAND EDITION
w/ Chelsea Coleman
& special guests, Melanie ChopkoEli MarienthalAriel WangSophia AguiñagaMorgan BolenderGraham Patzner, & Baraka Noel

On September 26th, 2018 we will gather in the side room of the Starline Social Club at 7:30pm. At 8pm we will begin a night of music, poetry, storytelling, and emotions-feeling. The theme is death, grief, loss, and our own mortality. Whether our own deaths feel near or far away, whether we have the privilege of coasting through life in denial of our eventual deaths and the deaths of those we love, or whether we are face to face with it all too often - most of us have something to say about it. In a world that would rather sweep sadness, anger, confusion, and grief under the rug, we will make a space for it together.

Throughout the night, we will bring some special performers up to the stage, and the rest is up to you. Bring your stories, songs, poems, or just your rapt attention. The only rule is that your performance must be under 5 minutes (we will give you a warning at 4 minutes). There will be a piano, an acoustic guitar, and two mics for you to use if you want! If you want to perform something that requires more than 30 seconds of setup, email me at chelsea@yg2d.com and we can figure out how to make it work w/o eating into your 5 mins. Get there when doors open at 7:30 if you want to sign up to perform!
