San Francisco-based YG2D is on a mission to inspire life by unabashedly sourcing our shared mortality! You're Going to Die brings people creatively into the conversation of death & dying, creating a space for all our mortal offering - poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… EVERYTHING GOES!

As a part of our second Alive Inside program [https://www.alive-inside.com] at Ohio’s Marion Correctional Institution, we’re offering an event on the outside, for local community, with an open mic featuring performances by our San Francisco-based artists!

You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes...
is an open mic event, the communal offering for us to explore the conversation of death & dying, to embrace our losses & mortality,
to grieve, bereave & honor those we’ve lost & love… while all the while making room for simply being ALIVE.

Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, you’d better get there early…

If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will hug you when we have to stop you [just to make it easier on you (or harder – depending on your propensity for intimacy)].

Poetry, prose, music, dancing, comedy, drama, happy, sad, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want.

You don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers.

Please don’t perform anything with a setup that takes much more time than the time it takes for you to walk onstage. Honestly, plugging things in is endlessly boring. If you need to borrow an instrument, figure it out before you’re called to the stage.

IMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged.

You're Going to Die. No. Really. You are.

Healing Broken Circles and You're Going to Die want to include everyone, so there is no charge. However, you may show your appreciation with a suggested donation of $10 at the door (or whatever feels right for you). *Donations help make more events like this possible*

Beer, wine and light refreshments available for purchase.

Whether our own deaths feel near or far away, whether we have the privilege of coasting through life in denial of our eventual deaths & the deaths of those we love, or whether we are face to face with it all too often - most of us have something to say about it. In a world that would rather sweep sadness, anger, confusion, & grief under the rug, we will make a space for it together.

Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to perform, you’d better get there early…

If you’re going to perform, keep it under 5 MINUTES. That’s right: 5 MINUTES. WE WILL TIME YOU. And we will stand up & get on stage with you & make things really awkward until you stop, & then give you a hug if you want one.

YOU'RE GOING TO DIE: POETRY, PROSE & EVERYTHING GOES...

You're Going to Die: Poetry, Prose & Everything Goes... Open Mic at The Lost Church - San Francisco w/Ned Buskirk & special guest musicians The Singer and The Songwriter...

The Singer and The Songwriter is the musical duo of vocalist/songwriter Rachel Garcia & guitarist/songwriter Thu Tran. “The duo creates soft melodic songs, that could just as easily exist as poems. Beautiful, & full of sound & emotion” (Playlist Play) while their multi-cultural backgrounds bring depth & diversity to the rich traditions of folk, jazz & blues music, genres they navigate between with ease & fluidity. Garcia’s voice is “rich & mellow, strong & elegant, delicate & turbulent” (The Huffington Post) while Tran’s dynamic guitar-playing “shimmies & swings like Django Reinhardt” (Nooga). At times heartbreaking, at times hilarious, their performances are open-hearted conversations with the audience where they share their stories full of honesty, humor & wit, while delivering their songs with riveting, economical precision. - www.thesingerandthesongwriter.com

You're Going to Die offers our first ever fully curated entertainment experience outside of San Francisco, proudly presenting great artists as they deserve to be presented: in a performance space deep & wide enough to hold all their brilliant articulations of the grittiest, darkest & most complex healing journeys we get to navigate as humans, in a room full of mortals who will collectively dive in with them, offering an opportunity to expand beyond ourselves into the wisdom of community, elevated in our togetherness with the living & the dead.
And we might dance a little, too.

YG2D Presents: Josiah Johnson

Josiah is best known for being a founding member of The Head and the Heart. He took a break from that work a few years ago to learn how to live more wholly integrated and to work with and through problems with addictions. His expanding solo creations feel good in intimate spaces. Deep and soulful ballads that paint the imagination with rich and emotional landscapes of love, loss and transformation. Josiah's solo performances highlight a stripped down, emotive, lyrics-and-voice-first kind of song craft, inimitable in its sincerity and beauty. - www.josiahjohnson.com

YG2D Presents: Zena Carlota

Oakland-based Zena Carlota wears many hats. As a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, visual and theater artist, Carlota uses her dynamic talents to navigate “the space between dreams, ancestry and memory in sound and imagery.” She is known for crafting genre-defying odes to what is lost, and reclaiming histories carried by Carlota’s distinctive soothing voice and the atmospheric sound of the Kora, a 21-string West African bridge harp she learned over ten years of study. - www.zenacarlota.com

YG2D Presents: Kelsey Gustafson

Kelsey Gustafson teaches body movement for trauma resolution, helping people reclaim their bodies, their pleasure, and their creativity. - www.kelseygustafson.com

YG2D Presents: Sam Sax

sam sax is a queer, jewish, poet, & educator. He's the author of Madness (Penguin, 2017) winner of The National Poetry Series and ‘Bury It’ (Wesleyan University Press, 2018) winner of the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. He’s received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Lambda Literary, & the MacDowell Colony. He’s the two-time Bay Area Grand Slam Champion, author of four chapbooks & winner of the Gulf Coast Prize, The Iowa Review Award, & American Literary Award. His poems have appeared in BuzzFeed, The New York Times, The Nation, Poetry Magazine + other journals. He’s the poetry editor at BOAAT Press & will be a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University this Fall. - www.samsax.com

YG2D Presents: Kim Lembo

When asked to sum up her last 15 years, Lembo says this: “The purpose of my semi-retirement from music was to discover who I am off the stage. I had spent most of my life prior either on the stage or, trying to get on it. The irony is, the work I was doing often times brought me on stage to talk with hundreds or even, thousands of people. I guess it is just who I am. That said, I’m much more interested in evolving and growing as a musician than trying to be a rock star. I’m fascinated by how music heals, moves, motivates and brings us together in community. It is a spiritual quest now, the wannabe rock star days behind me. I wasn’t very good at it anyway. I’m much better at being part of the whole of the experience as opposed to being the focus.” - www.kimlembomusic.com

No. Really. You are.

VENUE: Located off the beaten path, at the end of a residential cul-de-sac in the Richmond District, the copper-domed, Neo-Classical columbarium is a hidden gem & an architectural wonder. The structure features a large rotunda, mosaic tile floors, ornate stained-glass windows & a domed skylight. A colossal 45-foot atrium is surrounded by intricate balconies, with each of the 4 floors providing a glimpse into San Francisco’s history. Big thanks to Bobby Jo Valentine for the idea & to Brian Kestenblatt for the space!

OPEN MIC: Sign-ups will be the night of & the list fills up quickly, so if you want to share, arrive early. If you’re going to perform, please keep it under 5 MINUTES. If you feel compelled to, share whatever you want, but you don't have to perform anything at all - the audience is as essential as the performers.

PARKING: There is a parking lot, but space is limited. Public transportation is recommended.

COMFORT: The space was built in the late 1800s, so there is no heat, but a limited number of blankets will be available for use. Dress warmly!

The Camp Fire is the deadliest & most destructive wildfire in California history. It is also the deadliest wildfire in the United States, as well as the seventh-deadliest U.S. wildfire overall. Named after Camp Creek Road, its place of origin, the fire started on November 8, 2018, in Butte County, in Northern California. The fire has caused 77 civilian fatalities, injured 12 civilians & five firefighters, covered an area of about 140,000 acres, & destroyed 11,862 structures, including 9,700 single-family homes & 118 apartment buildings, with most of the damage occurring within the first two days.

The fire forced the evacuation of Paradise, Magalia, Centerville, Concow, Pulga, Butte Creek Canyon, & Yankee Hill & threatened the communities of Butte Valley, Chico, Forest Ranch, Helltown, Inskip, Oroville, & Stirling City. Within the first day, the fire essentially destroyed the community of Concow & the town of Paradise, incinerating homes, businesses, churches, a hospital, schools, & a rest home.

the OAKLAND EDITION

& special guests, Melanie ChopkoEli MarienthalAriel WangSophia AguiñagaMorgan BolenderGraham Patzner, & Baraka Noel

On September 26th, 2018 we will gather in the side room of the Starline Social Club at 7:30pm. At 8pm we will begin a night of music, poetry, storytelling, and emotions-feeling. The theme is death, grief, loss, and our own mortality. Whether our own deaths feel near or far away, whether we have the privilege of coasting through life in denial of our eventual deaths and the deaths of those we love, or whether we are face to face with it all too often - most of us have something to say about it. In a world that would rather sweep sadness, anger, confusion, and grief under the rug, we will make a space for it together.

Throughout the night, we will bring some special performers up to the stage, and the rest is up to you. Bring your stories, songs, poems, or just your rapt attention. The only rule is that your performance must be under 5 minutes (we will give you a warning at 4 minutes). There will be a piano, an acoustic guitar, and two mics for you to use if you want! If you want to perform something that requires more than 30 seconds of setup, email me at chelsea@yg2d.com and we can figure out how to make it work w/o eating into your 5 mins. Get there when doors open at 7:30 if you want to sign up to perform!

The San Francisco SPCA, always at the forefront of animal welfare, is the fourth oldest humane society in the U.S. and the founders of the No-Kill movement. As a result of their efforts and those of their community partners, San Francisco has the lowest euthanasia rate of any major city in the United States. No adoptable dog or cat in San Francisco goes without a home, even if they have medical or other issues. The mission of the San Francisco SPCA is to save and protect animals, provide care and treatment, advocate for their welfare and enhance the human-animal bond.

You're Going to Die is a 501(c)3 nonprofit bringing people creatively into the conversation of death & dying while helping to inspire & empower them out of the context of unabashedly confronting loss & mortality. We, as a community, desperately need these spaces, honest & safe community, online & off, to gather & grieve, to suffer the losses we’ve endured or stand to lose eventually, but to do it with one another, to be together in this often unspoken truth that we ALL share: We are all going to die.

As a part of Reimagine End of Life . April 16-22You're Going to Dieoffers another curated entertainment experience proudly presenting great artists as they deserve to be presented: in the concert context of acknowledging their brilliant beaming mortal magic. YG2D Presents curated shows steeped in the context of mortality, showcasing inspiringly enlivening musical acts with movingly entertaining spoken word.

YG2D Presents Mount Eerie...

In 2015 Phil Elverum’s wife, the French Canadian cartoonist & musician Geneviève Castrée, was diagnosed with cancer just after giving birth to their first child. She died a year later. Elverum wrote & recorded his Mount Eerie album “A Crow Looked At Me" throughout the fall of 2016 in the same room where Geneviève died, using mostly her instruments; her guitar, her bass, her pick, her amp, her old family accordion, writing the words on her paper.

The songs are about the brutal details of that experience, from the hospitalizations to the grieving, the specific domestic banalities that become existential in the context of such huge & abrupt loss. These songs are devastating in their straightforward vulnerability. They are pretty & they are deep, & they find a love that prevails beneath the overwhelming & real sorrow. It is unlike anything else in the Mount Eerie catalog in its unvarnished expressions of personal grief, metaphor-free.

YG2D Presents Dr. Michael Fratkin...

Father, husband, brother, son, and physician, Dr. Fratkin is dedicated to the well being of his community. Since completing his training, he has made his home and built his family in rural Northern California. He has served his community in primary care in a community clinic system, as a medical director of our local hospice, as a leader in the community hospital medical staff, and a transformative voice for improving the experience of people facing the end of life.

YG2D Presents Scott Ferreter...

Scott is a musician with a passionate belief that human beings are beautiful, & that they need not hide from their weaknesses & shortcomings, but celebrate themselves in full. A set of his music ranges from lighthearted & humorous to tragic & tearful, sometimes within the same song. His most recent release is "See You In The Morning Light," a cathartic album 4-years in the making that tells the story of losing his father to stomach cancer & discovering the shimmering beauty of being alive.

YG2D Presents Pablo Il Postino...

Pablo is a musician from Sacramento. His songs take on many different styles but tend to be consistent in their theme of reflecting on the mystery and endless comedy of life at both its most ecstatic and most profoundly tragic.

This event is a part of ReImagine End of Life [https://www.letsreimagine.org/], co-created by a loose network of interested artists, storytellers, healthcare professionals, innovators, designers, organizations and individuals, banding together to amplify the end-of-life conversation.

The organization was initially inspired by OpenIDEO’s End of Life Challenge, as part of a 2016 project to examine the intersection of art, meaning, and end of life.

The End of Life Challenge, led by IDEO's innovation portfolio, reached thousands of online and offline participants, helping remove the taboo around death and dying to create a global and solutions-oriented conversation.

Now, ReImagine builds on that experience, bringing forward optimism and innovation by providing a platform for many outstanding organizations and individuals working to elevate this topic.
